My Bicycle Adventures in France
Bill's bicycle trip around France in the summer of 2019
Arrival in Toulouse
Made it to Toulouse! So far, thing are going well: I bought a biycle, got some theater tickets, and generally got oriented.
I got my wonderful new bicycle and took it out for a maiden voyage. Also, a quick trip to Carcassonne, a nice outing to a café-théâtre, and a wonderful meal at a restaurant called "the dirty brts."
Bastille day, and first long ride.
The first day's ride went pretty well, with a couple of wrong turns and some headwinds.
Too many kilometers!
I've gone too far, too fast; time to slow down.
Flat tire! Broken spoke! Rain! And some wonderful people...
I got a flat tire, and soon after noticed a broken spoke, on the peak day of the heat wave. Quite an afternoon! But it's all fixed now, and I met some wonderful people along the way.
Turning a corner
My trip turned a corner - I turned right at the Loire river. This took me to Nantes, home of the steampunk elephant.
The Angriest Château in the World
The château that is so angry it cannot move. It cannot eat. It cannot sleep. It can just barely growl. -- Bound so tightly with tension and anger, it approaches the state of rigor mortis.
The high point of my trip
Orléans marks the high point of my trip, in that it's the furthest point north. Also, I get to install a new tire, and a new luggage rack! And, I think I've reached peak tacos.
Nevers on a Sunday
A canal bridge, and power that's clean! Safe! Too cheap to meter! Also, new brake pads for my bike. Finally, a lazy Sunday in Nevers.
Going through some decidedly less touristy terrain
I got to meet and stay with my friend Céline's mom, Eliette, just South of Chalon-sur-Saône.
Back on the road, and climbing up along the Rhône.
Hello Jet d'Eau!
A couple of nice towns along the partially-finished EV-17 route from Lyon to Geneva. Next, a bit of a climb, then Geneva!
Since I got to Geneva a week and a half earlier than I needed to, I was more or less forced to go on a bicycle tour of Switzerland. Don't you hate when that happens?
Up, up and away!
Continuing up through Switzerland, to the idyllic mountain town of Holderbank.
I made it up to Basel, and spent a couple of days there. A loop through Germany and a loop through France were nice, too. Now I'm ready for my week in L.A., on the way to Senegal!
